2022 Brings Another $3,000 Scholarship Opportunity

PFLAG Norman, a non-profit that provides advocacy, education, and support for LGBTQ+ in the Norman community, has announced the opening of their 2022 Harrington Scholarship. The Norman Chapter has offered scholarships to the community since 2006. “We’re ecstatic to offer a $3000 scholarship for the second year in a row,” said PFLAG Norman President, Michael Robertson. “And it wouldn’t be possible without our members and their generous donations.”

The scholarship was named after the Harrington family last year. Zack Harrington was a Norman North High School graduate and a recipient of the PFLAG scholarship. Zack tragically died after a controversial city council meeting in September 2010. While the council voted in favor of the proclamation to recognize October as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Month, the public comments created a toxic environment for those in attendance. Zack’s parents, Nancy and Van Harrington, became fierce advocates for LGBTQ rights after Zack’s death. After a legacy of providing advocacy, education, and support for the LGBTQIA+ community, Van passed away July 8th, 2020.

“This story is not a tragedy, but a story of encouragement and inspiration,” Michael explained. “Our board is honored to continue this educational opportunity for our community and in the name of the Harrington family.” For more information about the scholarship, visit our Scholarship Page.
